Common Questions
Do you offer online consultations?
Yes. We welcome patients online as well as in the clinic. Hands-on treatments like acupuncture, cupping and massage need to happen in person, but consultations, herbal medicine prescriptions and lifestyle guidance can all happen over a video call. Get in touch and we'll help you work out what suits your situation.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people feel little to no discomfort. The needles are extremely fine, much thinner than a standard injection needle. Many clients describe the sensation as a light tingle, warmth or dull ache at the point, followed by a deep sense of relaxation.
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes. We use single-use, sterile, disposable needles for every treatment, and your practitioner is fully trained and qualified in safe needling technique. As with any therapy, it's important to share your full health history with us beforehand, especially if you're pregnant, on blood thinners, or have a pacemaker.
Can TCM be used alongside my regular medical treatment?
Absolutely. TCM and acupuncture work well as a complement to conventional medical care, and we encourage clients to keep working with their GP or specialist for ongoing conditions, particularly concerns like autoimmune disease, stroke rehabilitation or chronic illness.
What can I expect at my first appointment?
Your first visit includes a thorough consultation covering your health history and current concerns, along with tongue, pulse and/or auricular diagnosis depending on your appointment type. From there, we'll talk through a tailored treatment plan before beginning your first session.
How many sessions will I need?
It varies from person to person, and depends on the concern, how long you've had it, and how your body responds. Some people notice a difference after one or two sessions, while chronic or long-standing issues typically benefit from a course of regular treatment over several weeks.
Are the effects of acupuncture cumulative?
Yes. Many clients find benefits build over a course of treatment, which is why we often recommend a series of sessions rather than a single visit, particularly for ongoing or chronic concerns.
What is cupping, and will it leave marks?
Cupping uses suction to release muscle tension and support circulation. It can leave temporary circular marks that fade within a few days to a week. These marks are a normal, expected part of the therapy, not a sign of injury.
What is moxibustion, and is it safe?
Moxibustion involves gently warming the skin near acupuncture points using dried mugwort (moxa). It's a safe, non-invasive technique used in TCM to invigorate Qi and blood flow, and is often chosen for concerns that respond well to warmth, such as period pain or digestive weakness.
Are Chinese herbs safe to take?
When prescribed and formulated by a qualified practitioner based on your individual diagnosis, Chinese herbal medicine is generally safe and well tolerated. We always take your current medications and health conditions into account before recommending any formula.
